While Boggiano’s win was impressive for its sudden, shocking conclusion, Aaron Ayzerov’s victory was amazing for how long and hard fought it was.
To call the Paramus sixth-seed’s 1-1 ultimate tie breaker win a marathon would be an understatement.

NJSIAA State Wrestling Championships, Quarters and Semis - 220
By Ryan Patti | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
It will be a battle of North Jersey standouts in the NJSIAA/Rothman Orthopaedics State Wrestling Individual Championships 220-pound title at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
Top-seeded Paramus senior Kyle Jacob and Delbarton second-seeded sophomore P.J. Casale are set to meet in Saturday’s finale, which will be the second-to-last bout of the weekend and a fitting ending for the top two grapplers in the bracket. It also could spell an unprecedented achievement for Jacob, who has yet to allow a point in his four bouts.
Jacob has credited his dominance to the work that was done in the wrestling room, which has led to a District 5 championship, Region 2 championship and 43-1 record this winter.
“I knew that working hard throughout the season and taking it match by match would send me to the finals this year,” he said. “I’m using my explosiveness and quickness and getting to my leg attacks well. I’m finishing strong on top and when I’m on bottom, I’m being smart.”
The 2019 second-place state finisher won by major decision (9-0) over Pitman fourth-seeded senior Zane Coles, who entered the bout at 41-0. Jacob tipped his cap to Coles and found a bit of trouble when he was on top.
“He was a strong kid,” he said. “It’s tiring when you have a strong kid on bottom and you’re trying to get his wrists and push forward. I treated him like how I treat every kid on the mat. I just wrestle my hardest.”
Jacob will come into his final bout as a Spartan like he has most of his career – as the favorite.
He refuses to take anything for granted, though, and he’s bracing for Casale’s strategy on the mat knowing how prepared he will be.
“Delbarton is one of the best programs in the state and a top program in the country,” he said. “P.J. is a great wrestler and he’s technical for a young kid, so he’s going to be tough to wrestle.”

“I’m a little tired, but I feel accomplished and excited already for the finals,” he said. “I’ll probably go home, eat good, get a good night’s rest, and probably not talk or think about wrestling until tomorrow though.”
Toranzo is a familiar face for Casale as the two grappled in 2019 at the Beast of the East tournament in Delaware. Casale has had respect for him for quite some time and saw improvement in his skill set since they last crossed paths.
“Mike’s a great kid and I’ve known him since I was little because we used to train with each other,” he said. “We actually stopped this year since we felt like we would compete against each other. I’m happy for him that he got this far and he’s obviously a tough opponent every time I wrestle him. He’s stronger and he has some great fakes. I had to set him up because he moves so well for a 220.”
Casale learned a few lessons during his first trip to ‘America’s Playground’ last March. He sees his mental state making a big impact on his final bout of the year.
“Last year I had a freshman mentality and I thought that since I was so young, it didn’t matter if I won or not,” he said. “Now, I feel like I can beat anyone in the weight. I know Kyle is a good wrestler and I’m going to have to wrestle tough.”

152 pounds:Semifinal recap-Boggiano shocks with “Spider” pin; Ayzerov earns upset UTB win

https://www.nj.com/highschoolsports/2020/03/152-pounds-semifinal-recap-boggiano-shocks-with-spider-pin-ayzerov-earns-upset-utb-win.html

Beating a top-seed in the state tournament with a defensive pin is pretty rare, to say the least.
Thanks to a move Toms River North fourth-seed Nick Boggiano calls “The Spider”, the rare became reality in the semifinals of the 152-pound bracket of the NJSIAA/Rothman Orthopaedics State Wrestling Tournament at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
Boggiano, a senior, used the move in bottom position to earn a fall over Lyndhurst top-seed Dylan Weaver, and to book his way to Saturday’s championship match.
“It’s just about staying confident and staying calm,” the Toms River North grappler said after the match. “There’s no point in getting all juiced up before your matches. You just gotta know your stuff and then go out and do it.”
With Weaver throwing legs in top position in the second period, Boggiano got himself into a back bridge, reached back with his arms and turned his own body around, to put the top-seeded Lyndhurst standout on his shoulders to secure the pin.
“I’m very flexible and I don’t really feel uncomfortable when kids throw legs,” Boggiano said.
Boggiano, an eighth-place finisher in last year’s 145-pound bracket, said he brought a different kind of focus into the semifinal than he had earlier in the season. The Toms River North standout credited his sole loss of the season, which happened to come at the hands of the loser of the other semifinal match, Camden Catholic’s Brandon Mooney, as a positive difference maker to his mentality.
“It helped me focus.," the 39-1 wrestler said. "The loss brought me back down, and I knew it wasn’t gonna happen again.”
While Boggiano’s win was impressive for its sudden, shocking conclusion, Aaron Ayzerov’s victory was amazing for how long and hard fought it was.

To call the Paramus sixth-seed’s 1-1 ultimate tie breaker win a marathon would be an understatement.
Ayzerov and Mooney, the second-seed, traded escapes in the first two periods, and a third-period rideout by Mooney sent the match to overtime.
After a scoreless sudden victory period, and two rideouts, Ayzerov was given top position in the deciding ultimate tie-breaker. Ayzerov said just four words flashed in his mind as he took position: “Hold this man down.”
And hold him down, he did. In the very end, Ayzerov 's top game came through for him and gave him the victory and the finals berth.
“(Mooney’s) shifty and I know he’s good, but I’m best on top,” Ayzerov said after the match. “I’m not letting the match come down to my best position to just let it slip away. That was just mental toughness right there.”
The mental aspect of the sport is something that’s certainly not lost on Ayzerov. The 30-3 Paramus junior wrote the words “2020 152-pound state title” in a notebook every day since the end of last year’s season.
That mentality has brought Ayzerov a long way from his finish in last year’s state tournament, where he went 0-2.
“I came in here saying I was gonna win a state title, and I’m one step closer,"Ayzerov said. “I love these kind of matches, it’s what I train for. My partner and I go a half an hour extra every day to win matches like that. I believe (the win) is what I deserve. I work too hard to go and lose in overtime.”
Ayzerov and Boggiano will square off on Saturday at 3 p.m.

NJSIAA State Wrestling Championships, opening round - 220
By Bill Evans | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
Delbarton sophomore P.J. Casale continued to tech his way through the 220-pound bracket at the NJSIAA/Rothman Orthopaedics State Wrestling Championships and top seed Kyle Jacob of Paramus ended the impressive postseason run of Moorestown’s Robert Damerjian.
Casale won all three matches by technical fall, including a 15-0 win over Kittatinny’s Jackson Crawn in the quarterfinals. Casale will face St. Joseph (Mont.'s) Michael Toranzo, an 8-5 winner over Gage Armijo of West Morris Mendham in the semifinal on Friday night.
On the other side of the bracket, Jacob – a state finalist a year ago – defeated Damerjian, who had taken the state by storm after returning from a broken thumb just a week-and-a-half before districts.Damerjian roared to district and region titles and reached the state quarterfinal before running into Jacob.
Jacob will face another South Jersey standout, Pitman’s Zane Coles, in the semifinal. Coles was impressive in defeating Rahway’s Joshua Darisme, 11-1.

152: Quarterfinal recap - He’s got no meniscus in his knee, but a semifinal showdown upcoming

1032020 NJSIAA State Wrestling Championships, opening round - 152
By JJ Conrad | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
Aaron Ayzerov had two options and one decision to make.
A torn meniscus he had been dealing with for months had finally reached a breaking point at the Beast of the East in December, with the Paramus junior laying on the mat writhering in pain in a blood-round match.
"It locked again and normally I could unlock it," he said. "I couldn't unlock it this time."
Days later, doctors gave him two potential courses of action -- remove the meniscus completely for a few-week recovery and rehab stint, all but guaranteeing arthritis later on in life, or repair it and face a six-month recovery period, but have a healthier knee in the future at the cost of his junior season coming to a premature end.
The choice should have been difficult.
But you can probably guess which option Ayzerov went with rather easily.
"I just thought I've worked too hard and this matters too much," Ayzerov said. "I'd rather be wrestling now than in 40 years. I love wrestling too much."
Ayzerov may not have a meniscus in his right knee any longer, but he does have a 152-pound semifinal showdown upcoming - just three months removed from surgery - after a thrilling upset in Friday’s quarterfinals of the NJSIAA/Rothman Orthopaedics Wrestling State Championships.
Trailing, 4-0, into the third period against Bergen Catholic's third-seeded Alex Strashinsky - an opponent who got the best of Ayzerov in the last two Region finals and once last summer, two ending by pin - Ayzerov took Strashinsky to his back and landed a pin of his own in 4:20."Exhillerating," he said. "I've never beaten this kid. I wanted this one for so long. Every time I've faced him I've gotten closer and closer. I might not be the most technically skilled wrestler on my feet, but I wrestle at a higher pace, I'm good on the mat, I can wrestle and I break kids."

Ayzerov welcomed the challenge that was likely coming against Strashinsky when the brackets were revealed and he ended up on the same side and even happier when, on Thursday, Strashinsky came from behind and eventually pinned Delbarton's Colin Calvetti in the pre-quarterfinals to set the stage for Friday.
“Most kids wouldn’t want that,” Paramus coach Chris Falato said. "But he’s such a competitor and he said avenging those losses would make placing even sweeter. ... What he did with his knee, that’s the price he’s willing to pay as a wrestler on this stage. Wrestling is the most important thing in his life right now.
“But he’s still focused on not being done. He doesn’t want to just place. He wants to win it.”
Ayzerov will meet Camden Catholic’s second-seeded Brandon Mooney - a 3-2 winner over Pope John’s Mathew Garcia in the quarterfinals - later on Friday in the semifinals.
He is now two wins shy of becoming Paramus’ first state champion since Kyle Cochran won the 160-pound title in 2016 (Ayzerov’s teammate Kyle Jacob also remains alive in the 220-pound semifinals).
“I’m going to take five minutes and be happy for myself about this, but I’m not happy just placing,” Ayzerov said. “That’s not what I came here to do. I have a notebook I write in every day, ’2020 state champion.' So, this is not it yet. I’m not done.”
ELSEWHERE IN THE QUARTERFINALS
Top-seeded Dylan Weaver of Lyndhurst/North Arlington downed Shore’s Michael McGhee, 9-4, in quarterfinal action. Weaver, junior, is now two wins away from becoming Lyndhurst’s first state champion since Rutgers coach Donny Pritzlaff three-peated from 1995-97.
Weaver will meet Toms River North’s fourth-seeded Nick Boggiano, who downed Delsea’s Jared Schoppe, 6-0, in other quarterfinal action.

Kyle Jacob (Photo: Anne-Marie Caruso/NorthJersey.com)

North Jersey qualifiers: Michael Toranzo of St. Joseph, Jonas Hyman of Ramsey, Kyle Jacob of Paramus, Remy Brancato of Bergen Catholic, Max Acciardi of Paramus Catholic, Danny Hasbani of Passaic Valley.
2019 medalists: Jacob (second), Gage Armijo of Mendham (third), P.J. Casale of Delbarton (fifth).
Outlook: Paramus' Kyle Jacob (39-1) has been unstoppable since his run last year to the state final and enters as the No. 1 seed. The Fordham football commit is bound to give the Spartans a state medalist for the 10th straight year, but will it be gold?
No. 6 Michael Toranzo and No. 10 Remy Brancato give the field a distinct Bergen County flair.

152
North Jersey qualifiers: Stefano Sgambellone of St. Joseph, Devin Ianelli of Northern Highlands, Alan Devries of Pompton Lakes, Alex Strashinsky of Bergen Catholic, Aaron Ayzerov of Paramus, Dylan Weaver of Lyndhurst/North Arlington.
2019 medalists: Weaver (third), Brandon Mooney of Camden Catholic (fifth), Strashinsky (sixth), Nick Boggiano of Toms River North (eighth).
Outlook: Rutgers-bound Dylan Weaver starts his bid to become the first state champion from Lyndhurst since Donny Pritzlaff, now an assistant coach with the Scarlet Knights. Weaver placed third in the state last season, giving him the top finish by a Golden Bear in 18 years.
Now, Weaver will headline a bracket full of Bergen County flavor, with Alex Strashinsky (third seed), Stefano Sgambellone (fifth) and Aaron Ayzerov (sixth).
138
North Jersey qualifiers: Michael Cetta of St. Joseph, Vincent DeMaria of Northern Highlands, William Grater of Bergen Catholic, Eric Freeman of Paramus, Damian Weaver of Lyndhurst/North Arlington.
2019 medalists: Anthony Clark of Delbarton (second), Jacob Perez-Eli of Paulsboro (second), Billy Talmadge of High Point (fifth), Cooper Pontelandolfo of Cherokee (sixth), Eddie Hummel of Southern (sixth), Grater (eighth).
Outlook: Paulsboro's Jacob Perez-Eli received the No. 1 seed and blocked the chance for an Anthony Clark-Michael Cetta final.
Clark, a two-time state champion, was the obvious favorite in this bracket until suffering a 12-5 loss to Cetta in the state team tournament. Cetta carried that momentum into the district and region tournaments, winning Outstanding Wrestler awards at both.
Now, Cetta will be the wild card in his Boardwalk Hall debut and could see the third-seeded Clark again in the semifinal.

220: Kyle Jacob, Paramus vs. Robert Damerjian, Moorestown
Jacob was a state finalist a year ago and has held down the No. 1 spot in this weight class. He has rolled through the postseason with nothing less than a 14-1 major. Damerjian returned from a broken thumb just in time for the postseason and he’s dominated state qualifiers Josh Ortiz of Highland, West Deptford’s Cody Thurston and Toms River North’s Michael Nakano. His highly-anticipated region final against Camden Catholic’s Hunter Suter was cut short when Suter was injured. Damerjian’s physical, aggressive style is different than most 220-pounders and would make for a fascinating

While not happy with how his freshman campaign ended last year, Eric Freeman firmly believes that everything happens for a reason.
Then a Paramus freshman, Freeman lost in the blood round in a brutally competitive 113-pound weight class to eventual state fourth Nick Kayal of Bergen Catholic.
"It was tough and I was mad about it, but you just push harder because of it," Freeman said. "It was a tough weight class and a tough opponent. But I think it's been motivating me ever since. When you experience a feeling that, it makes you work that much harder because you don't want to be in that position again."
Fast forward a year and Freeman is back in the Region spotlight - again one win away from his first career trip to Atlantic City.
With his 7-3 upset of third-seeded Eric Falleni of Lenape Valley, Freeman - the 6-seed - advanced to Saturday’s NJSIAA/Rothman Orthopaedics Region 2 semifinals, where he’ll get his opportunity to avenge a District final loss to West Essex’s Darren Jones.
Freeman was one of just three 6-seeds or lower to reach the semis, but those seeds mattered little to him Friday.
“When you’re out there on the mat, the seeds mean nothing,” he said.
And don’t label Freeman too much as a semifinal “surprise.” He’s now a 31-match winner with some competitive, tough losses to some top-caliber competition and someone Paramus fully expected to be in this position.“He’s under-the-radar big-time,” Paramus coach Chris Falato said. “But we know who he is and what he’s capable of doing. Last year, it was a struggle for him at 113 making weight and it affected him. He’s much more comfortable now and wrestling carefree and really letting it go. And when he does that, he’s so talented and so good.”
Freeman made quick work of his preliminary round opponent Wednesday, winning by fall in 2:55 to advance to Wednesday's quarters. Falato said they liked Freeman's draw in the bottom half of the bracket because it's on the opposite side of No. 1 seed Will Grater of Bergen Catholic and would allow the opportunity for a rematch against Jones in the semis after losing 4-1 last week.
Freeman - younger brother of Ryan, a state fourth at 113 in 2014 - was one of three Paramus wrestlers to advance, joining returning state qualifiers Kyle Jacob (220) and Aaron Ayzerov (152).
Now he's the one a win away from having his own opportunity to do some damage at Boardwalk Hall.
"We're looking to do a lot more than just get there," Falato said. "We want to make some noise. He's only a sophomore and he's going to get big and grow into his body some more.
“But we’ve got a lot of unfinished business this year.”

Wrestling: Paramus Catholic defeats Paramus 42-17.Paramus' Kyle Jacob has his hand raised after defeating Paramus Catholic's Max Acciardi in the 220 pound match at Paramus High School on 2/7/20.Tom Horak | For NJ Advance Media
220 POUNDS: Our picks
  • 1-Kyle Jacob, Paramus, Sr.
  • 2-Max Acciardi, Paramus Catholic, Fr.
  • 3-Remy Brancato, Bergen Catholic, So.
  • 4-Danny Hasbani, Passaic Valley, Sr.
THE SKINNY: One year after finishing runner-up in the state at 195 pounds, Paramus senior Kyle Jacob is the favorite to win his first state title at 220 this season. Jacob enters Region 2 with a 36-1 mark after claiming his third career District title. The state’s top-ranked 220-pounder is still eyeing his first Region title after reaching last year’s final for the first time before falling to Bergen Catholic’s Jacob Cardenas in what served as a preview of the eventual state final. Jacob could meet Paramus Catholic freshman Max Acciardi, the No. 2 seed here, in the Region final. Those two met in a regular season dual meet earlier this year with Jacob winning by decision.

152 POUNDS: Our picks
  • 1-Alex Strashinsky, Bergen Catholic, Sr.
  • 2-Aaron Ayzerov, Paramus, Jr.
  • 3-Dominick DeIntinis, Parsippany, Sr.
  • 4-Brandon Teresa, Montville, Sr.
THE SKINNY: This bracket features a strong top four in Bergen Catholic's Alex Strashinsky, Paramus' Aaron Ayzerov, Parsippany's Dominick DeIntinis and Montville's Brandon Teresa. Strashinsky, making his fourth Region appearance, is the top seed, and looking for his second straight Region title after winning the 138-pound title last year before finishing sixth in the state. He could meet Ayzerov in the final, with Ayzerov looking to punch his third career ticket to Atlantic City. These two met in last year's 138-pound final, with Strashinsky winning by fall in 21 seconds. A potential third-place match could be a rematch of this year's Morris County final between DeIntinis and Teresa, which DeIntinis won, 9-5. Teresa was a state qualifier last year at 138, while DeIntinis took fifth at 145.

  • Paramus’ Aaron Ayzerov was one of the most dominant wrestlers in the state Saturday, cruising to a District 4 title at 152 pound with three wins by fall in a grand total of 3:28, including a pin of Joey DelleMonac in 1:48 in the final bout. It was Ayzerov’s third straight District title - and he’s just a junior. Ayzerov’s teammate, Kyle Jacob, was equally as impressive in his third District title, too, winning by forfeit in the quarters before pinning in the semis and final.

It is the first step on the road to Atlantic City.
The top three finishers in all 32 of the NJSIAA/Rothman Orthopaedics District Wrestling Tournament will advance to next week’s eight regional tournament.
While the NJSIAA has gone to great efforts to balance the power in each district, some are still better than others.
The NJ.com wrestling staff ranked the 10 toughest districts in New Jersey.
Share the list with your wrestling-loving friends.

4-District 5 at West Essex
Teams: Bogota/Ridgefield Park, Dover, Emerson/Park Ridge, Morris Knolls, Mount Olive, Paramus, Paterson Kennedy, Teaneck, West Essex
He enters as an undefeated senior and returning state finalist, but Bardhyl Gashi of West Essex wasn’t even the best heavyweight in his own district a season ago. Gashi’s emergence in the postseason in 2019 sums up what makes District 5 one of the toughest. While there may not be any juggernaut programs, West Essex, Mount Olive, Paramus and Emerson/Park Ridge all bring some highly ranked individual talent and perennially turn in some sleepers - like Gashi -- capable of putting together spectacular postseason runs. This year alone, District 5 will feature three returning state finalists: Gashi, Emerson/Park Ridge’s Nick Babin and Kyle Jacob of Paramus.
Returning champions: 113: Nick Babin, Emerson, Sr.; 120: Logan Mazzeo, Emerson, Sr.; 138: Aaron Ayzerov, Paramus, Jr.; 145: Hunter Perez, Mount Olive, So.; 195: Kyle Jacob, Paramus, Sr.

Babin is a three-time Bergen County champion and his most recent title came with three pins in 38 seconds. Jacob, the star running back from Paramus, is a freakishly-gifted wrestler who earned respect in defeat to national No. 1 Jacob Cardenas.

Fifth-seeded Paramus defeated fourth-seeded Pascack Valley 43-27 in Hillsdale in the quarterfinal round of the NJSIAA/Rothman Orthopaedics North Jersey, Section 1, Group 3 Wrestling Tournament.
Paramus (12-13) will visit top-seeded Montville, No. 18 in the NJ.com Top 20, in the semifinal round on Wednesday in Montville.
Pascack Valley is now 13-15.

HOW PARAMUS WRESTLING IMPROVES WITH AARON AYZEROV'S RETURN

https://www.northjersey.com/story/sports/high-school/wrestling/2020/02/10/paramus-nj-wrestling-avenges-early-season-loss-advances-state-tournament/4677986002/

HILLSDALE – When it first happened, Aaron Ayzerov knew it was bad.
The Paramus wrestler felt a snap in his leg and the pain overwhelmed him on the mat. He tore his right meniscus in December and it threatened to end his season just days after it began. It was a crushing blow for a Spartan team with state title ambitions.
"We were very concerned," coach Chris Falato said. "We thought we were going to lose him for the year."
Ayzerov managed to save his season and keep the Spartans alive for at least another round. The 152-pounder chose the quicker route back and was rewarded again on Monday night. His pin in the opening match helped the Spartans roll to a 43-27 win over Pascack Valley in the North 1, Group 3 quarterfinals.
"Aaron brings energy back to the room," Falato said. "He's the unquestioned leader of the team and having him on the bench is huge for us. It's not just his physical ability to win wrestling matches."

Paramus is a different team with Ayzerov back and this match showed its potential. The Spartans lost to the Indians by nine points in the regular season, but that came without three starters: Daniel Casey (elbow), Eric Freeman (concussion) and Ayzerov.
All three Spartans returned for the rematch and each factored into the victory. Casey saved bonus points in the 285-pound bout and the others both pinned their opponent.

Paramus also received pins from Daniel Hong (106), Anthony Egbert (113), Brandon Myack (160) and Kyle Jacob (220).
"I want to wrestle," said Ayzerov, whose team will face defending-champion Montville. "I did everything to get back as fast as I could."
SCOREBOARD: Wrestling scores from state quarterfinal duals across New Jersey
Ayzerov came into the season with high expectations after qualifying for the state championships as a sophomore. He was dealing with a minor meniscus injury at the Beast of the East, but that didn't keep him from reaching the blood round. His fate suddenly changed in the third period of a 3-3 match when the injury went from bad to worse.

Doctors told him he could either get a full repair on the meniscus or try a less invasive surgery with a shorter recovery time.
"Aaron chose instead of repairing the meniscus to get it taken out," Falato said. "It basically guarantees that he'll have arthritis when he gets older, but he doesn't care. He wants to wrestle because wrestling is his life. He gives everything into wrestling."

Within a month, Ayzerov went from crutches to the starting lineup. He returned more than two weeks ahead of schedule and now hopes to put Paramus on the state podium for the 10th straight season. No other public school in North Jersey has a streak of more than three years.
"I feel it in the practice room every day," Freeman said. "He pushes me to the limit and helps me get better. It's good to have a guy like him on the team. He's a really good role model to me and to the rest of the team."
Ayzerov said he is excited to go up against Montville after facing them every year in youth wrestling. The Spartans almost had that opportunity in last year's sectional championship, but were knocked out a round early on criteria.
"We really wanted Montville last year," Falato said. "We matched up well with them."
"All the kids coming back from that team last year were just angry," Ayzerov said. "We took that over the summer and trained hard. That was what we were thinking about and talking about on the bus. We're not letting that happen again."

'I love the sport.' Why athletes committed to college in other sports keep wrestling

Sean Farrell, NorthJersey.comPublished 5:01 a.m. ET Feb. 10, 2020 | Updated 9:22 a.m. ET Feb. 10, 2020

One of the most well-known crossovers is Paramus senior Kyle Jacob. The 220-pounder received interest from Big Ten wrestling schools including Rutgers and Maryland, but chose to sign with Fordham for football. He's one of eight nationally-ranked wrestlers committed to college for another sport.

"I think he could be an amazing heavyweight wrestler," Paramus wrestling coach Chris Falato said. "I can't imagine there are many other kids who focus on another sport and still succeed in this sport to the level that Kyle has."
Jacob is ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 11 in the country, despite wrestling a total of three times this past summer. He never allowed a point in the Bergen County tournament and accepted his gold medal while wearing a white football sweatshirt. The senior expects his work on the mat will come in handy next year, as a safety or lineman.
"Wrestling, honestly, throughout my whole life has helped me with football with tackling," Jacob said. "It made me more aggressive and made me a better player. I just love the sport."

Wrestling: Paramus Catholic defeats Paramus 42-17.

For much of Friday night, Issa Sebahie sat in the same spot – front row of the bleachers, just to the right of the scorer’s table – watching the same Paramus wrestling team compete on the same mat that his son, Alex, once dominated on.
Except on this night, the affable and elder Sebahie was not there cheering on his gone far-too-soon son, but rather for a night of honor and remembrance celebrating the life of one of the most decorated wrestlers in Paramus history – and that’s saying something in a program as storied as Paramus’ has been.
The Class of 2016 Spartans graduate died tragically in an auto accident early on New Year’s Day 2019 at the age of 21. He would have celebrated his 23rd birthday last Monday.
Instead, on Friday, Sebahie’s legacy and memory were honored by friends, family and former teammates, coaches and classmates – a tight-knit Bergen County community still in mourning after the fatal Paramus bus crash in May 2018.
But few in town personified #ParamusStrong more than Alex Sebahie.
To honor him Friday, a 52-second moment of silence was taken with his parents and three brothers in the center of the mat just prior to the 152-pound bout – a tribute to the weight class Alex wrestled at his senior year – and the Never Back Down Foundation took centerstage.
Both teams sported new Never Back Down memorial T-shirts and all proceeds from the night will be split evenly to create two scholarships for one Paramus and Paramus Catholic wrestler and awarded later this year.
The foundation itself was created in Alex’s name last year – in short time after his passing, too, thanks to the tireless work and effort put in by his mother, Rosie – to help turn tragedy into opportunity for local wrestlers and teams in need of financial assistance.
It’s exactly the kind of foundation Alex would have wanted.
He was a young man described by many as kind-hearted, caring and selfless – the type of person who, his father said, once had his car towed after leaving it unattended, only briefly, to walk around the corner to buy a homeless man in Paterson a sandwich.
That’s who Alex Sebahie was and this is a foundation those closest to him know he would be proud of.
“If there’s a kid out there in need, a family out there in need, really anyone in the wrestling community in need, send us an e-mail and we’re going to do what we can,” his mother said. “That’s what we want to do with this.”
In the last year alone, thanks to the work of Never Back Down, nine scholarships were awarded in Sebahie’s name and, additionally, singlets were donated to the Bogota/Ridgefield Park wrestling program.
It is all being done to keep the the proud memory of Sebahie alive.
“Alex had this never back down attitude about everything,” his mother said, holding back tears, just outside the Paramus gymnasium prior to the ceremony.
"He didn’t care if you were a state champ or if you were a senior and he was a freshman. He didn’t care how strong you were or what your record was. He just kept going. And that’s what we’re trying to keep going. We want kids to follow that mentality, for all kids to be strong, no matter what.
"We want Alex's memory to live on in this kind of positive light. That's what gives me, and our family, strength at the end of the day. Having people remember him for everything he's done."
Sebahie, who went on the wrestle at Rider University briefly his freshman year, was among the state's best during his high school days. His father is the first to admit Sebahie was never the most gifted wrestler technique-wise.
But what he lacked in technical skill, he more than made up for with his strength, his heart, his will and his undeniable refusal to quit. He truly was the ultimate competitor.
“He was the toughest kid I ever met in my life,” Paramus coach Chris Falato said. “And I’ve been around a lot of tough ones. Just the toughest, fiercest wrestler I’ve been around, but such a team-oriented kid, too.”
It all led to four state qualifying seasons, two Paramus sectional titles and a 121-14 career record as he became a member of the prestigious Paramus 100-win club, joining fellow former Spartan greats like Joe Trovato (158), Nick Alpher (139) and former state champion, good friend and former workout partner Kyle Cochran (143), currently a sophomore wrestler at Maryland.
“And he should’ve had even more, too,” his father said with a smile, looking up at the banner in the gymnasium honoring the program’s all-time wins leaders. “If he wasn’t getting hurt all the time.”
Wrestling: Paramus Catholic defeats Paramus 42-17.
Alex Sebahie's name stands hung up on the banner that represents all former Paramus wrestlers with 100 wins or more on Alex Sebahie Night at Paramus High School on 2/7/20.Tom Horak | For NJ Advance MediaDespite battling multiple injuries, Sebahie still made four trips to Boardwalk Hall and twice reached the podium, taking eighth at 132 pounds in 2014 and sixth at 138 pounds in 2015. A late-season shoulder injury during a Region semifinal win his senior year almost certainly cost him a potential third podium visit. At far less than 100 percent, Sebahie – the No. 1 seed at 152 that year – withdrew after a second-round loss in Atlantic City, a 1-0 decision against an opponent he had beaten, 11-0, earlier that season.
"He just wanted to try," his mother said of her son, who very well may have attended Navy had it not been for that shoulder injury. "He had to try, in his mind."
Ironically, two of the four bouts Paramus won Friday against Paramus Catholic came at the only two weights Sebahie placed in Atlantic City at – 132 and 138 pounds, courtesy of Ardan Amora and Eric Freeman, respectively.
Another came courtesy of current state No. 1 220-pounder Kyle Jacob, who was never teammates with Sebahie, but the two knew each other well and, in fact, wrestled against each other during a Paramus practice shortly before Sebahie’s passing just over a year ago.
Keep in mind, Jacob had roughly 60 pounds on Sebahie at the time.
“[Alex’s] dad was telling this story of how Alex came home after they wrestled that day and just started eating and working out,” Falato said. “His dad was like, ‘What’s going on?’ And Alex just goes, ‘I just wrestled Jacob and he’s the strongest kid I ever wrestled. But I’m going to go back and beat him tomorrow.’ He was all motivated to get him the next day.”
True to his foundation’s motto, Sebahie never backed down – not well after his graduation and not to an eventual state runner-up opponent who had 60 pounds on him.
That was Alex Sebahie.
Now, it’s memories like those that the Sebahie family cherishes.
Even Friday, his mother walked the Paramus halls intermittently throughout the night looking back at commemorative plaques honoring her son’s past accomplishments, such as his individual state finishes and All-American honors.
“That’s all we’ve got now,” she said. “The photos and the memories.”
Gone but never forgotten, the memory of Sebahie will undoubtedly live on.
“I believe everything happens for a reason,” Issa Sebahie said. "And wherever he is now, I know he’s helping someone somewhere. People over the past year keep asking how I stay so strong through all this. I say it’s because I want to be as strong as he was. We all grow up trying to teach our kids something; he’s the one teaching me something.
“I want to live through him. Treat everyone with respect. Stay positive. Pay it back – like he would want. That’s what we’re all doing. That’s what this is all about.”

WRESTLING: PARAMUS SENIOR AND DIVISON I FOOTBALL COMMIT REACHES 100 WINS

Wrestling: Paramus senior and Divison I football commit reaches 100 wins
Sean Farrell, NorthJersey.comPublished 5:12 p.m. ET Jan. 7, 2020 | Updated 3:47 p.m. ET Jan. 22, 2020
Kyle Jacob has tackled another one of his biggest goals.
The Paramus senior and star safety hit the 100-win mark on Friday night – even while taking the road less traveled to get there.
Jacob is a returning state finalist and one of the nation's best wrestlers at 220 pounds, but he's dedicated most of his time to football. It's hard to tell that he wrestled just three times this past summer.
"I had a lot of accomplishments (on my mind) coming into the season: winning the districts, regions, states, counties and definitely getting my 100th win," said Jacob, a Fordham football commit. "It definitely means a lot to me."
If Jacob is not the most dominant wrestler in the state right now, he's at least in the conversation. He rolled through the Bergen County Tournament this season without giving up a point and hasn't been scored on in over a month.

(Photo: Anne-Marie Caruso/NorthJersey.com)Jacob missed some time a year ago with scar tissue in his right knee, but nothing is slowing him down this winter. He's put together a 20-1 record as a senior, which includes 13 pins and a win over the state's No. 3 heavyweight."I feel a lot better," Jacob said. "I feel more confident. I feel stronger, bigger and faster."Jacob put it all together last season with a run to the state finals at 195 pounds and now ranks 11th at his weight on InterMat. Eight of the ten wrestlers above him are committed to Division I wrestling schools and the other two are uncommitted.

"He's probably the most physically gifted wrestler that we've ever had," Paramus coach Chris Falato said. "The fact that he doesn't have to focus that much on wrestling and still has the success that he has is a tribute to the outstanding athlete that he is."
While other wrestlers came into the season refreshed and ready to go, Jacob had about a week to recuperate between seasons. He paid the price as the Spartans' all-time leading rusher and took a few days off before resuming his lifting program.

Jacob said it took some time to get back in the swing of things on the mat, but his opponents might disagree.
"I had to wrestle him so I know," Falato said. "He's obviously gotten better, but he didn't feel rusty to me. He gets better every day."

What constitutes toughness?
Ask 100 people and you’ll likely receive 100 different answers.
It’s the subjectivity of a question like: “Who’s the toughest of them all?” that makes the discussion worth having.
The three members of the NJ.com wrestling staff asked that question. Together, they attempted to formulate an answer. The result? The NJ.com Pound-for-Pound Wrestler Rankings.
In March, we get to find out who’s the best in each of the state’s 14 weight classes, we can only speculate and argue about who are the best wrestlers in New Jersey regardless of size.
That’s where the pound-for-pound rankings come in.
This is our annual feature on the guys who aren’t afraid to tough it out against anyone. They welcome challenges and live up to the hype week in and week out. They win with big offense or tough defense and somehow leave us amazed every time they strap on their headgear.
So check out the rankings below and let us know what you think in the comments section.
RULES AND GUIDELINES
  • P4P rankings are chosen and updated by NJ.com’s wrestling reporters Pat Lanni, Joe Zedalis and Bill Evans and posted every Wednesday for the next six weeks. The rankings are based on matches and results reported through Jan. 11.
  • We will add five new wrestlers every week until we get to a final 50. Wrestlers will move up and down the rankings accordingly based on performance.
  • Wrestlers are ranked at their lowest weights or where they’re expected to compete in the postseason.
  • We will not rank wrestlers who are injured or have not competed recently.
